Birthstones are known to bring good luck.  We don’t really know where this tradition started but it thought to have started in India or possibly South America.

Here is a little poem about October‘s birthstone, the opal:

“October’s child is born for woe,
And life’s vicissitudes must know,
But lay an opal on her breast,
And hope will lull those woes to rest.”

Opal symbolizes hope, innocence and purity. It also is associated with happiness, loyalty and confidence.  Some people believe it can heal problems with the eye.  It strengthens dreams, imagination and healing.

Opal is often found in the US, Mexico and Australia. It comes in more colors than the commonly associated milky opal, including the blues and yellows pictured above.
