Every year from late January through mid-February, Tucson, Arizona, transforms into a gemstone lover’s paradise as it hosts the world-renowned Tucson Gem and Mineral Shows. What started as a single event has grown into a sprawling collection of approximately 60 shows across the city, attracting gem dealers, lapidary artists, jewelry designers, collectors, and enthusiasts from around the globe. As a jewelry designer and artist, I have been fortunate enough to attend a small select group of these shows for forty plus years to choose gemstones for my collection at llyn strong fine art jewelry located at 1322 E. Washington St. in midtown Greenville, SC.

The American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) Gem Fair, known for its high-end gemstones and ethical sourcing, and the GJX Show, a premier marketplace for rare gems and jewelry, are among the must-visit venues for designers and retailers from around the globe. The original Pueblo Show remains a favorite of mine for its mix of minerals, fossils, and anything unusual that our beautiful “Mother Earth” produces, while numerous outlying shows—scattered in tents, hotels, and exhibit halls—offer everything from raw mineral specimens to metaphysical crystals to things you may not even imagine that come from every continent of our amazing earth. Whether you’re a serious buyer or simply fascinated by Earth’s treasures, the Tucson shows promise an unforgettable experience filled with discovery, networking, and dazzling beauty. Even after forty years, I am always amazed and inspired by what I see and experience. As a jewelry designer, attending the Tucson Gem and Mineral Shows offers me incredible opportunities to elevate my craft and business.

5 Key Reasons to Attend

With thousands of vendors from around the world, you’ll find an unmatched variety of gemstones, beads and unique materials to inspire your designs all at one time. “What a wonderfully creative overload!”
2 – Quality and Pricing
So much inventory in one area at one time gives you access to high quality materials at competitive prices, helping you to maximize your buying power, thus enabling you to offer your customers the best quality at the best pricing possible.
3 – Networking with Industry Professionals
Connecting with gemstone suppliers, fellow designers, lapidary artists, and other experts can provide many insights, collaborative opportunities and build long-term business relationships.
4 – Trends and Inspirations
Discovering the latest gemstone trends and possibly new gemstone discoveries, cutting styles, and jewelry innovations helps in staying ahead in the industry and keeping your ideas and designs fresh and competitive.
5 – Educational Opportunities
Many of the Tucson Shows (particularly The American Gem Trade Association Show) host seminars, workshops, and talks on gemstone sourcing, ethical practices and lapidary techniques helping you to refine your skills and expand your knowledge and creativity. Attending Tucson’s shows is a game-changer for any jewelry designer looking to grow creatively and professionally!

Besides all the incredible gems and networking opportunities, the Tucson shows are simply fascinating and so much fun. It is amazing to see the vast array of natural treasures from around the world, each showcasing the Earth’s beauty in a unique way. Over the years, I’ve brought home stunning pieces, like large agate slices from Brazil and petrified wood unearthed from depths of 300 feet in Arizona – then shipped to France and transformed into exquisite tables. I now own two coffee tables and a side table made from this remarkable material. This year, I found an exciting new way to incorporate some of my Tucson discoveries into my work. I just completed my four encaustic paintings, each featuring a one-of-a-kind dendritic agate mined in northern India. Every year, something new inspires me and I always look forward to my next adventure in Tucson!
